Here’s the deal.

I have never liked the skin under my chin. Not as a child, as an adolescent, as an adult… and even less now, at the age of 62. So I spent the past 4 months running through all the “cons” of plastic surgery:

1 ) how vain
2 ) what waste of money ( all the starving children)
3) isn’t elective surgery an oxymoron?
4) as a Shaman, I should accept aging with utter grace.

But after months of contemplating my neck, I saw where that turkey gobble skin was headed… and it wasn’t pretty.

I took Metropolis, my stuffed ostrich, with me to the pre-op appointments and was delighted to find that everyone in the office had a sense of humor….which, for me, ranked right up there with surgical skills as a priority. Yesterday, the day of the surgery, I remember nothing after the IV. Later I awoke looking like I was headed for the nearest Roller Derby.

I still don’t have the right pain meds (Shaman are tricky that way), so I was up all night. I practiced various forms of meditation, none of which worked to induce sleep. I’ll keep you posted on my progress. I have a lot more to say but for now, let me just say this: I have no doubt I did the right thing for me. My body. My life. My choice.

Since I began my study and practice of Shamanism many years ago, I’ve noticed a widening gap between what I experience as true and what people believe about the work that a shaman does.  There is much confusion, and many misconceptions exist about the ancient Shamanic traditions and practices that are the basis for my work.

In this blog I will dispel some of the myths around Shamanism, share some of the wisdom I have acquired along the way; offer some practices that may help you connect more fully with your own life journey; and ignite a conversation about how the ancient practices of Shamanism can be effectively applied to many aspects of modern life.

I also will include an ongoing little series of (in my humble opinion) funny videos on Shamanism as seen through the New Age Movement (Shit Shaman Say). As serious as the work is, I think a sense of humor is essential!
